Happy St. Patrick’s Day

Since my name is O’Keefe and the Irish have long held a special spot in literary tradition, I can’t let a March 17th go by without wishing everyone happy green beer day!

My favorite event of the day is The World’s Smallest St. Patrick’s Day Parade in Enterprise, AL. When I say small, I mean that it’s a parade of one person. Each year since 1993, a different person of Irish decent holds the Irish flag high above head, carries a pot o’ gold and recites limericks as he/she walks past the local courthouse and around the Boll Weevil Monument.
Boll Weevil Monument
Yes, a Boll Weevil Monument. The only monument in existence that exults the virtues of an agricultural pest.
According to Wikipedia “As a tribute to how something disastrous can be a catalyst for change, and a reminder of how the people of Enterprise adjusted in the face of adversity”

And that’s an Irish sentiment indeed.
